LA Underground Culture Maven and Free Range Gourmandizer Open Neighborhood Grocery Store

On Sunday, April 10th 2022, Michelle Juliette Carr and Brian Wotring are celebrated the grand opening of their whimsical grocery store, The Golden Poppy Market in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Cypress Park. Described aptly by a customer as a “Boutique Bodega”, the sexy 1930’s through a 1970’s lens, design vibe was inspired by swingin’ London’s Biba’s Food Hall. The Golden Poppy Market carries everything from caviar to cat food! As a true Mom n’ Pop operation, Michelle and Brian take great care in selecting organic produce, fresh cut flowers, pantry staples, a wide array of beverages, fine cheese/charcuterie & accoutrement, fresh baked bread by Bub & Grandma’s, a cornucopia of nostalgic candy and fine sweets by Cake Monkey and Valerie Confections.

Though The Golden Poppy is an emporium of indulgence, they carry practical household items like Mrs. Meyer's laundry detergent, cleaners, paper towels and toilet paper. They even have a mini apothecary with a varied array of medicines. Feeling peckish? They offer a rotating menu of delicious prepared foods under their own banner - GoPop!, Heirloom LA, and classic bodega style Italian subs and deli sides by Uncle Paulie’s that one may enjoy on the go or on site in their shady back patio.

  • Los Angeles native Michelle Juliette Carr tapped into the showbiz genes of her vaudeville grandparents. One of her first performances was as a topless go-go dancer for art star Vaginal Davis’ band Pedro Muriel & Esther at LACE Gallery in 1989. Working two jobs, she saved money to open Jabberjaw with a partner. The coffeehouse-cum-all-ages-club, located in Arlington Heights from 1989 to 1997, was where Kurt Cobain, performing with Nirvana, met his idol, Iggy Pop. “It was a wonderland of fake glamour and kitsch that we whipped up from thrift store scores with almost no money,” says Carr.

In 1995, Carr launched the burlesque revival with the Velvet Hammer Burlesque, a troupe of artists of various shapes and sizes. After staging shows in L.A. for a decade, she took the group to Berlin—and stayed for three years touring and performing in Europe. While in Berlin she authored a book of photography featuring The Velvet Hammer Burlesque published by Die Gestalten Verlag and worked on her second book, an anthology of her club Jabberjaw Published by Rizzoli.

Returning state-side in 2008, Carr continued producing multimedia events and by day worked as an event chef and creating a popular pop-up called “Secret Supper Club”.
